Just a reminder: our guild meeting will take place from 10:00 – 2:00 this Saturday, August 4.
This month’s special program is an introduction to hand carding. The program will be led by Jenny Bennett and will involve processing washed fleece into smooth, easy to draft rolags.
If you would like to participate in the class please bring a pair of hand cards and a few dollars for Barb Keyes as she is contributing washed fleece to the class. If you have an extra pair of hand cards and don’t mind sharing please consider bringing them with you (with your name written on them, of course).
If you intend to purchase a pair of cards before the meeting Jenny suggests looking for rounded backed cards as opposed to the flat back cards. The flat backs may be more suitable for cotton or very fine fibers versus medium wool, which is what we will be working with.
(Webmistress’ Note: Hand cards should be available to buy locally at the Smoky Mountain Spinnery. As far as I know they are not available locally otherwise although they can be ordered for use after the meeting via one of the local yarn shops that sell wheels like Forget Me Knot or The Yarn Haven or online via shops like The Woolery, Halcyon Yarn or WEBS).
If you’d like to get a feel for what will be covered in the class Ashford has a basic hand carding introduction available via YouTube. I’ve posted the video below for easy viewing. You may also enjoy Interweave’s new “How to Card Wool” DVD or digital video. A preview of the four spinners featured in the DVD is also below.
